Monochrome Weekly - White Birch and White Snow

I went for a walk a couple days ago and found that the overcast sky made everything look white. Especially these white birch trees along the bank of a frozen lake.

  1. Winter is a fine time for finding natural B&W photos. You've plenty of texture here.

  2. Beautiful, peaceful composition.
Question for you - How did you decide on B&W for this one or in general? I find that I usually like my color photos(when comparing side by side) a lot better.

  3. Tash - I'm the opposite, I almost always prefer B & W over color. The best B & W photos are those with a lot of contrast - this can be colors or textures. This photo was pretty easy to transition to B & W since it was almost void of any colors, but had good texture contrast. There was a slight bluish haze in the background that needed to go bye-bye. A few tweaks in Photoshop, and she was good to go.

  4. Nice one Roger. I'm firmly in the B&W camp with the occasional foray into color. I must decide ahead of time because I only shoot with film.

  5. Birches are indeed fantastic trees. The disposition of the logs is very inspiring.
